Muriel House

Muriel House is a transitional home in southeast D.C. It provides short-term crisis housing for homeless or transient pregnant and parenting youth as they work towards the goals of healthy birth outcomes and independent living or reunification with their families.

Muriel House has 8 individual living units along with offices, security, and storage.  The transitional home accommodates eight young mothers and their children, each living in their own apartment. HBP staff maintain a presence in Muriel House 24/7. The facility is two blocks from the bus line and is near grocery stores, pharmacies, and two elementary schools.

In a typical year, at least half of HBP’s case managed young mothers need stable housing. The demand escalated further during the COVID-19 epidemic. HBP expanded its housing capacity by opening Muriel House in 2020, joining its sister facility Perennial House in providing a safe haven for young District teen mothers. HBP’s two transitional homes are congregate settings and as such much limit the number of residents in order to reduce exposure.
