HOPE Stories: Hard Work Opens the Door to Nia’s Future

A young mother and her children in a safe, stable home environment.

Nia was just 17 years old when she and her family were evicted from their home.

She was also eight months pregnant.

With nowhere else to go, Nia moved in with her child’s father. She slept on the sofa and tried to endure unsafe living conditions — rats and roaches moving through the apartment at night. Over time, the situation became more dangerous. Her child’s father became abusive, and when Nia realized he was taking her money, she knew she had to leave.

That’s when Nia and her newborn son were connected to Healthy Babies Project.

Hard Work Leads to Safety

“Nia has been very active in working to improve her situation,” her case manager explains.

To escape immediate danger, Nia moved into one of HBP’s transitional homes for a short period of time. With stability and support in place, she began the difficult work of finding permanent housing. Phone call after phone call, application after application — Nia persisted until she secured an apartment of her own.

During this time, she welcomed her second child — a baby who would require multiple surgeries, therapy, and intensive medical support from birth.

Hard Work Builds a Future

Despite the challenges, Nia did not give up. She put her children first, ensuring they were safe, healthy, and thriving. Both children are now doing well in preschool.

At the same time, Nia has continued to invest in her future. She has saved money, built her credit, and is actively working toward homeownership. She continues to attend GED classes, determined to complete her education.

“Nia wants her children to understand the value of education,” her case worker shares. “She is focused and more motivated than ever.”

A Story Still Being Written

Nia’s story is not finished — but her progress is undeniable. She has escaped homelessness and abuse. She has built a support system. She has created a loving, stable home for her children.

By every measure that matters, Nia is already a success.
