“From Homeless to Helping Others”

By Joetta F.

My name is Joetta and I am 33 years old.  A friend bought me to Healthy Babies Project in 1988 when I was 21 years old, seven months pregnant, homeless, and I did not have anything for my child.  I felt comfortable right away. There was a place to sit and talk to the staff.  I felt wanted.

The staff fed me healthy meals, got me into a temporary shelter, and then helped me find public housing. They helped me go where I needed to go in order to get help.  In fact, the staff went out of their way to make sure I had whatever I needed. Several times the agency didn’t have resources but the staff helped me out their own pockets. I had medical care, some helpful and fun trips, and ceremonies. HBP also makes sure children have what they need when they are born.

My son is thirteen now. He attends school and is in seventh grade. I am currently in a medical assistance training program and doing well.

I refer friends for support services with HBP.  I walked into the doors of HBP again today to see what services they have for one of my relatives as well as the young girls in my neighborhood.  It would be really good if there were programs like HBP in every ward.   Thank you, HBP, for all that you have done to aid me.
