Washington, D.C. – On August 15, 2011, the HBP staff, family, and friends gathered to celebrate and honor ten amazing and resilient TPEP graduates: Raven Coston, Lauren Wallace, Alisha King, Shawon McCrary, Geneka Osborne, Diamonique White, Patesa Johnson, Kahlin Kelley, Dynesha Battle, and Ebony Scott.
These young ladies were saluted and congratulated for completing all the requirements for HBP’s Teen Parent Empowerment Program (TPEP). The graduation ceremony was part festival, part delicious and heartfelt celebration. The teens shared stories about their lives and challenges as well as their hope for the future. “TPEP has given me a better understanding of myself and life,” said one.
Keynote speaker, Ms. Angela Brown of the Carl Vogel Center, reflected on the TPEP retreat as she talked about lessons learned and shared compelling statistics, stories and myths about HIV/AIDS. She reminded the girls about the importance of safe sex, HIV/AIDS prevention, and other sexually transmitted diseases.
In the spirit of giving back to the community and TPEP, the 2011 graduates presented the HBP Executive Director, Ms. Regine Elie, with a beautiful plant. “On behalf of the TPEP Class of 2011, please accept this plant which represents life,” said Patesa Johnson, speaking on behalf of TPEP Graduate Class of 2011. “May TPEP continue to grow and nurture young people.”
HBP extends deepest thanks to all those who sponsored a teen, donated financial gifts, and supported the TPEP fundraisers. We truly appreciate your support, time and energy. The teens had a life-altering experience. We can’t begin to express our gratitude for your commitment and faith in our programs … and the lives you have helped change.
If you know an at-risk pregnant teenager, encourage her to enroll in the Fall 2011 session of TPEP.
